Did you know that outside of the genetic makeup of their sex, male & female mosquitos are very much different? For instance, female mosquitos are the only ones that "bite" you. Male mosquitos do not bite. The whole purpose of a mosquito biting you is to extract your blood for the proteins that help them breed. Speaking of breeding, did you know that it takes as little as 1 tablespoon of water for mosquitos to be able to breed? It's true, that's why it is important to eliminate as much standing water from your property as you can! Mosquitos lay eggs in this water in the form of what's known as "rafts". These rafts can produce up to 100 mosquitos every 3 days by 1 female mosquito, allowing for thousands of mosquitos hatching on your property every week. The average male mosquito only lives on average 6-7 days before dying. However, a female mosquito lives on average 6-7 weeks, but can live up to 5 months under the right conditions! This means 1 female mosquito can produce up to 5,000 mosquitos per year!
Where do mosquitos go in the winter months? Well its a two part answer: Male mosquitos do not hibernate and they die off in the cooler weather, whereas females will hibernate in the ground, trees, logs, etc. for up to 6 months. However, their eggs that they laid prior to the cooler weather can survive in these conditions up to 10-15 years. As soon as the weather gets above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, they hatch and come out. It's a never ending cycle.
